Kirk Schmidtman has maintained a small-town private law practice for the past 45 years in which he has been an active and respected member of the Woodburn community. Many of his clients have come to him through referrals from their neighbors, and his involvement in youth coaching, church activities, civic groups, and volunteer opportunities has helped build a reputation for community service, in addition to his reputation for quality legal work. Former law partner Robert Engle retired in 2015, but the firm has continued under the registered business name of Engle & Schmidtman by which the firm has been known since 1989

Kirk is in the later stage of his legal career in which he refers more legal work opportunities to other attorneys at Sussman Shank LLP, but also continues to have a busy law practice, primarily in the current practice areas of estate planning and probate, with the assistance of his long-time probate assistant and office manager, Stacy Berkey, who has worked for the firm since 1989.

I have maintained a private law practice in Woodburn serving individuals, families, and businesses in Woodburn and the surrounding area since 1976, and have been affiliated with Sussman Shank LLP as “Of Counsel” since 2018. Clients have appreciated and often commented about the quality of legal services provided by my firm, and we take pride that our firm has developed and maintained a substantial and loyal client base over the past decades. Our best marketing has been word of mouth from satisfied clients, many of whom have also been our friends and neighbors.

I have been actively involved in multiple organizations and communities for many years. I have been a member of the Woodburn Rotary Club since 1987, serving in various leadership positions, including past President, Membership Chair, Program Chair, and numerous Committee Chairs. Additionally, I received District Governor Citations twice, in 1993 and 2015. I am also a choir member and tenor at St. Luke Catholic Church since 1998, and I have been a member and chair of the Finance Council since 1995. Furthermore, I have been an assistant Boys Varsity Basketball Coach at Kennedy High School in Mount Angel, Oregon since 2012, and I am a member of the Woodburn Area Chamber of Commerce.  I have participated in the Oregon State Bar Mentor Program, and have mentored several new Oregon attorneys.

On a personal note, I own a family wheat farm in eastern Washington and relate well to the farming community. I have been married for 45 years and have three children and six grandchildren. Lastly, I still own the piano that was gifted to me on my 7th birthday in 1958, and I continue to enjoy playing music.
